MEDICAL MARIJUANA FOR ALS
(LOU GEHRIG'S DISEASE)

Lou Gehrig’s Disease is a progressive disease that attacks the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Since the brain is responsible for controlling muscle movement, including involuntary muscle movement, it ends up affecting speech, breathing, and swallowing. Paralysis can also result in the later stages. Although there is no known cure for it, medical marijuana has helped slow the disease’s progression in certain patients.

HOW CANNABIS CAN HELP

Tests conducted on lab mice have shown that cannabis prescriptions can reduce inflammation and serve as an antioxidant. It can also help with some of the symptoms, such as appetite and sleep issues. Similarly, a study done by the California Pacific Medical Center showed that medical marijuana can extend the life of an ALS patient by three years or longer, and also relieve muscle spasms .

As medical marijuana is hopefully approved for more uses in the future, researchers will be able to discover even more possible benefits for ALS patients. Located in Buffalo, NY,  Adult Health DNP can help those suffering from ALS through regularly prescribed medical marijuana.
